Referred Otalgia

Dr. Srinivas: "Hello...today we will learn something about very simple ear disorder..excited no?!

What is Otalgia??

Definition
Otalgia also known as earache. It is a pain in the ear which make the patient very uncomfortable. The pain may increase on lying down due to increased blood supply to the ear in the recumbent position.

There are several aetiology which can cause pain in the ear..Local causes for referred otalgia

First is via Trigeminal Nerve..
Yes! one of u should stand up and tell me the 5 T causes for referred otalgia

Student 1 : Teeth, Tongue, Tonsils and Throat...errr..and i more T i dunno Dr.

kami : erkkkk?? apakahh..kmi tak dapat nak terima hat yang parotid tue..pelik sggh mneumonic Dr nih..sia-sia ja kene perli..klu parotid ni smp sok pun lom tentu kmi ley cari pe T yg last tue..T nya just pada last n cuma perlu tekankan kat "tiidd" tu ja..hehe..lawak2 but the way Dr tu habaq sgt kiut!! cukup 6 harkat n qalqalahn kubra nyee sekali..hehe


Itulah antara pelajaran kmi hari ini...Dr. ni selalu wat kmi tersengih sorang2 bila teringat kaedah mneumonic dia yang selalu cam takdak kaitan langsung..n suma org pun akn tersenyum sumbing ja bila dia ajaq apa2 mneumonic..hihi..cian Dr. tu..ramai org x puas ati..tp hat yang pelik ni lah yg kmi selalu ingt..hee


Hmm..alang-alang dah balajaq ni..lets continue our lesson for today naa..hee

Other local causes are via Facial Nerve, via Glossopharyngeal Nerve, Vagus Nerve and via Cervical Nerve.

Diagnosis
Beside the examination of the ear, other structure like nose, paranasal sinuses, oral cavity, pharnyx and larynx should be examined. Temporomandibular joint and neck should also be checked. Elongated styloid process should be palpated before the diagnosis can be made.

Management
1) Specific treatment depends upon the cause
2) General management consist of administering analgesics, antibiotics and anaesthetics ear drops.
